Weather and when to go
Chikkamagaluru has four quite different seasons and they change what is worth doing here, not just what to pack. October to February is the short answer; the rest of this page is why, and what the other months are actually good for.
Monsoon
June to September
Rain most days, often all day, and the district at its greenest. Cloud sits on the peaks, so the famous views are frequently a white wall.
Good for
- Waterfalls at full force
- Estates at their most beautiful
- Fewest visitors, lowest rates
Be ready for
- Ghat roads close for landslides with no notice
- Leeches on every forest path
- Trek routes shut at short notice; summit views unlikely
Post-monsoon
October to December
The best of it, and everyone knows — the rain stops, the air clears, and the hills are still green. Book early, especially weekends.
Good for
- Clearest views from Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri
- Waterfalls still running
- Trekking season opens; rafting on the Bhadra runs October to December
- Coffee harvest begins
Be ready for
- Busiest and priciest
- Cold at altitude before sunrise
Winter
January to February
Dry, bright and cool. Mornings can be genuinely cold on the ridges, which is exactly why sunrise treks are worth the alarm.
Good for
- Best trekking weather of the year
- Coffee harvest through February
- Reliable clear mornings
Be ready for
- Smaller waterfalls thinning out
- Bring a jacket for dawn starts
Summer
March to May
Hot in the plains, bearable in the hills, and quiet. The cheapest time to come, and the one where the photographs disappoint.
Good for
- Very few visitors
- Lowest rates
- Wildlife easier to spot near water
Be ready for
- Many waterfalls reduced to a trickle or dry
- Fire risk closes some forest routes
- Hazy views
The actual forecast
We do not show live weather here — your phone already does, and a stale number on a travel site is worse than none. For the official forecast and any warnings, the India Meteorological Department is the source everything else quotes.
mausam.imd.gov.inIn the monsoon, check the ghat roads are open before you set off — how to reach has the routes. If a provider cannot run your booking because of the weather, that counts as their cancellation and you are refunded in full.
